In 2021, the Japanese prepared dish and meal market decreased by -11.8% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Hong Kong SAR (X tons), China (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of prepared dish and meal exports from Japan, together comprising 52% of total exports. These countries were followed by Taiwan (Chinese), South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +33.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for prepared dish and meal exported from Japan were Hong Kong SAR ($X), China ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 62% share of total exports. In 2021, supplies from abroad of prepared dishes and meals was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 2.9% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, prepared dish and meal imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

South Korea (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of prepared dish and meal imports to Japan, together accounting for 72% of total imports. These countries were followed by Singapore, New Zealand, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Netherlands, the United States and Australia, which together accounted for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +34.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
