In 2021, the Japanese hot-dipped metal-coated sheet market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2021, after eight years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of hot-dipped metal-coated sheet, when their volume increased by 35% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Thailand (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of hot-dipped metal-coated sheet exports from Japan, with a combined 44% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Taiwan (Chinese), India, South Korea, Malaysia, the United States, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Hong Kong SAR and the Philippines, which together accounted for a further 48%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +11.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for hot-dipped metal-coated sheet exported from Japan were Thailand ($X), China ($X) and Mexico ($X), together comprising 45% of total exports. India, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese), Vietnam, Malaysia, the United States, Indonesia, Hong Kong SAR, the Philippines and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 46%.

The United States, with a CAGR of +10.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average hot-dipped metal-coated sheet export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Japan

In 2021, the amount of hot-dipped metal-coated sheet imported into Japan rose modestly to X tons, increasing by 3.5% on the year before. In general, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -13.2% against 2019 indices. Moreover, hot-dipped metal-coated sheet imports from South Korea exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from South Korea amounted to +3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+18.9% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.1% per year).
