The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, plastic household articles exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -31.8% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 29%. Hong Kong SAR, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Australia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 46%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +48.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for plastic household articles exported from Japan were China ($X), the United States ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), together accounting for 47% of total exports. Hong Kong SAR, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, the Netherlands, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +28.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average plastic household articles export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -11.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 7.6%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (-1.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Japan
In 2022, overseas purchases of household articles and toilet articles of plastics decreased by -2% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 5.9%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, plastic household articles imports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 6.8% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of plastic household articles to Japan, accounting for a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic household articles imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Malaysia (X tons), with a 4.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+5.6% per year) and Malaysia (+3.6% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of household articles and toilet articles of plastics to Japan, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with an 8.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 4.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+8.5% per year) and Thailand (+2.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average plastic household articles import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 4.7% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
