In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Japanese industrial robot market, when its value decreased by -47.6% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, industrial robot production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 32%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of industrial robots for multiple uses increased by 35% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +43.8% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, industrial robot exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +49.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

China (X units), the United States (X units) and Luxembourg (X units) were the main destinations of industrial robot exports from Japan, together comprising 75% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +72.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), the United States ($X) and Luxembourg ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for industrial robot exported from Japan worldwide, with a combined 75% share of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +76.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average industrial robot export price amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 1.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 9%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Luxembourg ($X per unit) and the Netherlands ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to India ($X per unit) and Thailand ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Luxembourg (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Japan
In 2021, supplies from abroad of industrial robots for multiple uses decreased by -17.7% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, industrial robot imports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 71%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest industrial robot supplier to Japan, with a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, industrial robot imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Denmark (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +7.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (+64.3% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+8.3% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of industrial robots for multiple uses to Japan, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Denmark ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +11.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (+70.6% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+11.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average industrial robot import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 6.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+15.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
