The Japanese inedible fish products market fell to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -10.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, Thailand ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for inedible fish products exports from Japan, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Thailand stood at +76.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-17.7% per year) and South Korea (+13.6% per year).

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, inedible fish products imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Korea (X tons), China (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main suppliers of inedible fish products imports to Japan, with a combined 95% share of total imports. Thailand and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 1.9%.
