South Korea (X tons) was the main destination for lactose exports from Japan, with a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, lactose exports to South Korea exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), threefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Korea stood at -2.7%.
In value terms, South Korea ($X) remains the key foreign market for lactose and lactose syrup exports from Japan, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Korea was relatively modest.
Export Prices by Country
The average lactose export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -38% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 136%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lactose Imports
Imports into Japan
In 2022, approx. X tons of lactose and lactose syrup were imported into Japan; surging by 16% against 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, lactose imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest lactose supplier to Japan, with a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, lactose imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), threefold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States stood at +4.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+4.9% per year) and the Netherlands (-2.1% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the largest lactose suppliers to Japan, with a combined 87% share of total imports. New Zealand, Canada, Poland and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.
Among the main suppliers, Poland, with a CAGR of +100.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lactose import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 27% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
