The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, fishing rod exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +67.8% against 2015 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
China (X tons), the United States (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main destinations of fishing rod exports from Japan, with a combined 52% share of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese), Hong Kong SAR, Vietnam, Australia, the Netherlands, Thailand, France, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +17.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), the United States ($X) and South Korea ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for fishing rod exported from Japan worldwide, together comprising 49% of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese), Hong Kong SAR, Vietnam, Thailand, Australia, the Netherlands, Singapore, France, Malaysia and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
The Philippines, with a CAGR of +12.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average fishing rod export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 13%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of fishing rods and other line fishing tackle increased by 28% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +41.7% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, fishing rod imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +77.4% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of fishing rod to Japan, accounting for a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, fishing rod imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), sevenfold. Malaysia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +5.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+10.0% per year) and Malaysia (+6.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fishing rods and other line fishing tackle to Japan, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +6.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+10.3% per year) and Malaysia (+7.5% per year).

The average fishing rod import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 8.8%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
