Linoleum Market Size in Japan
For the third consecutive year, the Japanese linoleum market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 12% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +136.0% against 2015 indices. Linoleum consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports from Japan
In 2021, approx. X square meters of linoleum were exported from Japan; rising by 211% against 2020. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The exports peaked at X square meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, linoleum exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United States (X square meters) was the main destination for linoleum exports from Japan, accounting for a 43% share of total exports. Moreover, linoleum exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vietnam (X square meters), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Mongolia (X square meters), with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States stood at -6.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (-6.3% per year) and Mongolia (+19.6% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and South Korea ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for linoleum exported from Japan worldwide, with a combined 85% share of total exports. Vietnam, Malaysia, Mongolia, China, the Philippines and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
Mongolia, with a CAGR of +12.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average linoleum export price amounted to $X per square meter, dropping by -3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 92% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2018 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+25.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Linoleum Imports
Imports into Japan
In 2021, imports of linoleum into Japan expanded significantly to X square meters, rising by 12% on the previous year. Overall, imports recorded pronounced growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 116%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, linoleum imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +117.4% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Netherlands (X square meters) constituted the largest linoleum supplier to Japan, with a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, linoleum imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X square meters), ninefold. Taiwan (Chinese) (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands stood at +5.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+36.7% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+26.9% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of linoleum to Japan, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands totaled +1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+58.2% per year) and China (+13.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average linoleum import price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 29%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2016 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per square meter), while the price for Belgium ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+24.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
