Lithium-Ion Accumulator Market Size in Japan

In 2021, the Japanese lithium-ion accumulator market decreased by -28.6% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, consumption saw a sharp downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lithium-ion accumulator production contracted modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 6.9% against the previous year. Lithium-ion accumulator production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of lithium-ion accumulators increased by 37% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 393%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, lithium-ion accumulator exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +64.2% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The United States (X units) was the main destination for lithium-ion accumulator exports from Japan, with a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, lithium-ion accumulator exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X units), threefold. The UK (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States totaled +52.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+23.1% per year) and the UK (+66.7% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for lithium-ion accumulators exports from Japan, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to +16.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-5.3% per year) and the UK (+33.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average lithium-ion accumulator export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a precipitous slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 7.3% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (-14.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Japan

For the tenth year in a row, Japan recorded growth in purchases abroad of lithium-ion accumulators, which increased by 42% to X units in 2021. In general, imports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, lithium-ion accumulator imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest lithium-ion accumulator supplier to Japan, accounting for a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, lithium-ion accumulator imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X units), sixfold. Singapore (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +32.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+43.3% per year) and Singapore (+65.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lithium-ion accumulators to Japan, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 9% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +12.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+18.0% per year) and Singapore (+40.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average lithium-ion accumulator import price amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -10.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 2.2%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the price for South Korea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
