The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. Thailand (X units), China (X units) and the Netherlands (X units) were the main destinations of public works machinery exports from Japan, with a combined 43% share of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese), the Philippines, Indonesia, Italy, the United States, the UK, Singapore, Australia, Russia and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of machinery for public works and building decreased by -20.2% to X units for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2020, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, public works machinery imports shrank notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Germany (X units) constituted the largest public works machinery supplier to Japan, with a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, public works machinery imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X units), threefold. China (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany stood at +21.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+21.2% per year) and China (+34.1% per year).
