The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, food manufacture machinery exports rose notably to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +79.5% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

China (X units), the United States (X units) and South Korea (X units) were the main destinations of food manufacture machinery exports from Japan, with a combined 59% share of total exports. Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan (Chinese), Canada, Singapore, France, Australia, Hong Kong SAR, Germany and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +45.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), the United States ($X) and South Korea ($X) constituted the largest markets for food manufacture machinery exported from Japan worldwide, with a combined 57% share of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese), Thailand, France, Canada, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.
France, with a CAGR of +39.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average food manufacture machinery export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, waning by -6.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 31%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of machinery for the preparation or manufacture of food or drink was finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 43%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, food manufacture machinery imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of food manufacture machinery to Japan, with a 34% share of total imports. Moreover, food manufacture machinery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X units), with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-0.7% per year) and Germany (+4.9% per year).
In value terms, the largest food manufacture machinery suppliers to Japan were Germany ($X), China ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 56% of total imports. These countries were followed by the United States, the Netherlands, Italy, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese) and Spain, which together accounted for a further 30%.
Italy, with a CAGR of +10.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average food manufacture machinery import price amounted to $X per unit, growing by 3.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
