Maize Market Size in Japan

In 2022, the Japanese maize market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a mild shrinkage. Maize consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, maize production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Maize production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average maize yield in Japan was estimated at X tons per ha, picking up by 2.9% against the previous year's figure. In 2022, purchases abroad of maize (green) decreased by -6.7% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 8.4%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, maize imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Thailand (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of maize imports to Japan, together comprising 95% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 2.9%.
