In 2021, the Japanese memories market decreased by -65.1% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a deep reduction. Memories consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +18.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 126%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, memories exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +74.8% against 2015 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), China (X units) and Malaysia (X units) were the main destinations of memories exports from Japan, with a combined 93% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +34.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for memories exported from Japan were Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), China ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 94% share of total exports.
Malaysia, with a CAGR of +54.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average memories export price amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a modest expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 119%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of multichip integrated circuits: memories increased by 12% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, memories imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) constituted the largest supplier of memories to Japan, accounting for a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, memories imports from Taiwan (Chinese) exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X units), threefold. China (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Taiwan (Chinese) stood at -1.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+1.4% per year) and China (+3.6% per year).
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) constituted the largest supplier of multichip integrated circuits: memories to Japan, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Taiwan (Chinese) totaled +2.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+6.2% per year) and South Korea (-6.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average memories import price amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, memories import price decreased by -9.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 53%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per unit), while the price for Singapore ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
