Potato Starch Market Size in Japan

In 2021, the Japanese potato starch market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, saw a slight setback. Potato starch consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, potato starch exports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 139% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

China (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main destinations of potato starch exports from Japan, with a combined 53% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong SAR, the United States and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +67.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for potato starch exports from Japan, comprising 31% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China amounted to +9.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+21.6% per year) and the Philippines (+69.4% per year).

In 2021, the average potato starch export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 144% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, imports of potato starch into Japan dropped to X tons, which is down by -11.5% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 178% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato starch imports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 169% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
