Exports from Japan
In 2021, the amount of sauces and seasonings exported from Japan surged to X tons, jumping by 21% against the previous year. In general, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +113.9% against 2012 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sauce and seasoning exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +80.6% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The United States (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main destinations of sauce and seasoning exports from Japan, with a combined 38% share of total exports. These countries were followed by China, Hong Kong SAR, Australia, the UK, Germany, Thailand, the Netherlands, France, Singapore and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 43%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +34.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and South Korea ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for sauce and seasoning exported from Japan worldwide, together comprising 44% of total exports. These countries were followed by Hong Kong SAR, China, Australia, Thailand, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, Singapore, France and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 38%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Belgium, with a CAGR of +14.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average sauce and seasoning export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 11%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (-1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Japan
In 2021, the amount of sauces and seasonings imported into Japan expanded significantly to X tons, growing by 5% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 6.4%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, sauce and seasoning imports rose notably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Thailand (X tons), China (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main suppliers of sauce and seasoning imports to Japan, together comprising 51% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +10.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Thailand ($X), China ($X) and the United States ($X) were the largest sauce and seasoning suppliers to Japan, together accounting for 51% of total imports. The average sauce and seasoning import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 3.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average import price increased by 8.2% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
