Vitamin Market Size in Japan

The Japanese vitamin market totaled $X in 2021, with an increase of 2.7% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. In value terms, vitamin exports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for vitamin exports from Japan, with a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, vitamin exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States stood at -4.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.1% per year) and Germany (-30.3% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for provitamins and vitamins exports from Japan, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States totaled +2.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-1.6% per year) and South Korea (-3.2% per year).

In 2021, overseas purchases of provitamins and vitamins increased by 4.9% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 18%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, vitamin imports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of vitamin to Japan, accounting for a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, vitamin imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Switzerland (X tons), with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +1.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-0.8% per year) and Switzerland (+0.5% per year).
