In 2021, the Japanese sausage market decreased by -11.2% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption saw a perceptible setback. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sausage exports fell slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 56%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
Hong Kong SAR (X tons) was the main destination for sausage exports from Japan, accounting for a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, sausage exports to Hong Kong SAR exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Philippines (X tons), with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hong Kong SAR amounted to +16.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+303.5% per year) and the Philippines (+35.1% per year).
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the key foreign market for sausages and similar products of meat exports from Japan, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Hong Kong SAR totaled +11.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+442.1% per year) and the Philippines (+23.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average sausage export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -17% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 4.8%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+34.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Japan
In 2021, the amount of sausages and similar products of meat imported into Japan dropped to X tons, which is down by -9.2% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports saw a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sausage imports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United States (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of sausage imports to Japan, with a combined 74% share of total imports. Brazil, Denmark and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +6.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest sausage suppliers to Japan were the United States ($X), Thailand ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 74% of total imports. Brazil, Italy and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
Italy, with a CAGR of +4.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
