The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for sesame oil exports from Japan, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Canada ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 6.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States stood at +6.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+10.2% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+6.4% per year).

The average sesame oil export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 12%. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sesame oil imports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Vietnam (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of sesame oil imports to Japan, together comprising 92% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +4.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.
