Silver Ore Market Size in Japan
In 2021, the Japanese silver ore market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, consumption recorded prominent growth. Silver ore consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Japan
In 2021, silver ore exports from Japan shrank slightly to X kg, flattening at 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 6,626% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, silver ore exports rose modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 5,189% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Singapore (X kg) was the main destination for silver ore exports from Japan, accounting for a 94% share of total exports. Moreover, silver ore exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Malaysia (X kg), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Singapore totaled +8.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (-48.9% per year) and China (-63.3% per year).
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the key foreign market for silver ore exports from Japan, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 5.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Singapore amounted to -36.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-67.7% per year) and Malaysia (-55.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average silver ore export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 3.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a significant contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (-6.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Silver Ore Imports
Imports into Japan
In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of silver ores and concentrates, when their volume increased by 16% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 70%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, silver ore imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 99%. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Bolivia (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) were the main suppliers of silver ore imports to Japan, together accounting for 85% of total imports. These countries were followed by Peru, Mexico and Chile, which together accounted for a further 14%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Peru (with a CAGR of +73.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Bolivia ($X), Russia ($X) and Peru ($X) appeared to be the largest silver ore suppliers to Japan, with a combined 88% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Peru, with a CAGR of +79.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average silver ore import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 40%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while the price for Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
