Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Japan
In 2022, imports of sulphites into Japan declined to X tons, which is down by -10.3% on 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, sulphites imports expanded to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +71.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Thailand (X tons) constituted the largest sulphites supplier to Japan, with a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, sulphites imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), fivefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Thailand totaled +1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-2.2% per year) and Germany (+29.2% per year).
In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sulphites to Japan, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Thailand amounted to +3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+0.8% per year) and Germany (+33.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average sulphites import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were China ($X per ton) and Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
