In 2021, the Japanese tamping machinery market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, the total consumption indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. Canada (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.4% share.

In 2021, overseas purchases of tamping or compacting machinery increased by 1.8% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tamping machinery imports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Vietnam (X units) constituted the largest tamping machinery supplier to Japan, accounting for a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, tamping machinery imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X units), more than tenfold. Austria (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Vietnam totaled +70.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-29.1% per year) and Austria (+57.6% per year).
