Tea Market Size in Japan

The Japanese tea market shrank to $X in 2022, falling by -3.9% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 4.3%. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of tea decreased by -2.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tea exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of tea exports from Japan, with a combined 73% share of total exports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 16%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+15.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of tea decreased by -7.9% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 4.5%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tea imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 4.8%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of tea imports to Japan, together comprising 75% of total imports. Kenya, Indonesia, Malawi and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malawi (with a CAGR of +27.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest tea suppliers to Japan were China ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and India ($X), with a combined 78% share of total imports. Kenya, Taiwan (Chinese), Indonesia and Malawi lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Malawi, with a CAGR of +27.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average tea import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 6.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 7.6%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
