Hong Kong SAR (X tons) was the main destination for tomato exports from Japan, accounting for a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, tomato exports to Hong Kong SAR exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X tons), fivefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Hong Kong SAR totaled +60.5%.
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the key foreign market for tomatoes exports from Japan, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Hong Kong SAR amounted to +56.1%.

The average tomato export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -12.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR stood at $X per ton.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of tomatoes decreased by -25.4% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tomato imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Korea (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of tomato to Japan, with a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, tomato imports from South Korea exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (X tons), sixfold. Mexico (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from South Korea stood at +6.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (+17.1% per year) and Mexico (+21.0% per year).
In value terms, South Korea ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tomatoes to Japan, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Canada ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from South Korea amounted to +2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (+21.1% per year) and Mexico (+19.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average tomato import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -9.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 9.9%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
