The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, unvulcanised rubber exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Thailand (X tons), China (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of unvulcanised rubber exports from Japan, together accounting for 58% of total exports. Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico, Hong Kong SAR and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +60.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for unvulcanised rubber exported from Japan were China ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together accounting for 56% of total exports. These countries were followed by the United States, the Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico, Hong Kong SAR and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 36%.
Among the main countries of destination, Mexico, with a CAGR of +49.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average unvulcanised rubber export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 4.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 8.4% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+8.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of unvulcanised rubber decreased by -2.6% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 16%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, unvulcanised rubber imports declined to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Imports by Country
South Korea (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main suppliers of unvulcanised rubber imports to Japan, together comprising 74% of total imports. Thailand, the United States, Germany, Italy, China and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +33.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest unvulcanised rubber suppliers to Japan were Malaysia ($X), South Korea ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a combined 69% share of total imports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
