Germany (X units), the United States (X units) and Hong Kong SAR (X units) were the main destinations of video game console exports from Japan, together comprising 66% of total exports. China, Singapore, Taiwan (Chinese), the United Arab Emirates, Australia and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +29.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third consecutive year, Japan recorded growth in purchases abroad of video game consoles (not operated by means of payments), which increased by 14% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, video game console imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 84%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, China (X units) was the main supplier of video game console to Japan, with a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, video game console imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X units), more than tenfold.
