In 2022, overseas purchases of wood chips and particles increased by 4.4% to X cubic meters, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wood chips and particles imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a mild decrease. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Vietnam (X cubic meters), Australia (X cubic meters) and the United States (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of wood chips and particles imports to Japan, together comprising 66% of total imports. South Africa, Chile, Thailand, Indonesia and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +30.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
