Imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates into Japan skyrocketed to X cubic meters in 2021, with an increase of 22% on 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Vietnam (X cubic meters) constituted the largest wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates supplier to Japan, accounting for a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Australia (X cubic meters), threefold. Chile (X cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Vietnam totaled +15.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (-4.1% per year) and Chile (-9.5% per year).
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates to Japan, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with an 8.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Vietnam amounted to +13.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (-6.1% per year) and Chile (-10.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, reducing by -1.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries.
