Cotton Fabric Market Size in Japan

The Japanese cotton fabric market shrank to $X in 2021, falling by -6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. Cotton fabric consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cotton fabric exports reached $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of cotton fabric exports from Japan, together accounting for 59% of total exports. These countries were followed by Bangladesh, Cambodia, Italy, Mexico, Hong Kong SAR, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 31%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +38.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for woven fabrics of cotton exports from Japan, comprising 31% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China amounted to -12.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (-8.1% per year) and the United States (-3.5% per year).

The average cotton fabric export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 5.3% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of woven fabrics of cotton decreased by -13.2% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cotton fabric imports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 7.4%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Pakistan (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main suppliers of cotton fabric imports to Japan, with a combined 84% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand and India, which together accounted for a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +4.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of woven fabrics of cotton to Japan, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to -9.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-4.6% per year) and Pakistan (+0.5% per year).

The average cotton fabric import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
