The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

China (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main destinations of wrapping papers exports from Japan, together comprising 57% of total exports.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Japan
In 2021, overseas purchases of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard increased by 37% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, wrapping papers imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +67.7% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of wrapping papers to Japan, accounting for a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, wrapping papers imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Finland (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Korea (X tons), with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +16.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Finland (-2.5% per year) and South Korea (+2.0% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard to Japan, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +15.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Finland (-3.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+7.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wrapping papers import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
