Artichoke Market Size in Jordan

The Jordanian artichoke market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after four years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. Artichoke consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of artichokes in Jordan totaled less than X kg per ha, stabilizing at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, shipments abroad of artichokes decreased by -18% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 199%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, artichoke exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 262%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

The UK (X tons) was the main destination for artichoke exports from Jordan, accounting for a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, artichoke exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Sweden (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the UK totaled +25.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+2.6% per year) and Sweden (+28.4% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for artichokes exports from Jordan, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sweden ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK totaled +40.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sweden (+27.2% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+0.4% per year).

In 2022, the average artichoke export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 143%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+11.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, after eight years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of artichokes, when their volume decreased by -65.8% to X kg. Overall, imports, however, recorded a measured increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, artichoke imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 85% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Lebanon (X kg) was the main supplier of artichoke to Jordan, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Lebanon amounted to +40.3%.

In value terms, Lebanon ($X) constituted the largest supplier of artichokes to Jordan.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Lebanon stood at +58.5%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average artichoke import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -10.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Lebanon.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Lebanon amounted to +13.0% per year.
