Cherry Market Size in Jordan

The Jordanian cherry market dropped to $X in 2022, declining by -13.1% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -28.0% against 2020 indices. Cherry consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cherry production expanded significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 190% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average cherry yield in Jordan declined slightly to X tons per ha, which is down by -2.2% on 2021 figures. In general, the yield indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cherry yield increased by +1.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 120% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the average cherry yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of cherries in Jordan reached X ha, increasing by 10% against 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cherry production attained the maximum at X ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Jordan

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of cherries, when their volume decreased by -52.5% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 564% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, cherry exports declined sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 1,013% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) were the main destinations of cherry exports from Jordan, with a combined 79% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, Syrian Arab Republic, Qatar and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Qatar (with a CAGR of +48.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Kuwait ($X) and Bahrain ($X) constituted the largest markets for cherry exported from Jordan worldwide, with a combined 79% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, Syrian Arab Republic, Qatar and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +65.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cherry export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 68% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Oman ($X per ton) and Bahrain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Qatar ($X per ton) and Kuwait ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Syrian Arab Republic (+19.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cherry Imports

Imports into Jordan

In 2022, approx. X tons of cherries were imported into Jordan; waning by -41.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 244% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cherry imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 191%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main suppliers of cherry imports to Jordan, together accounting for 100% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Lebanon (with a CAGR of -0.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest cherry suppliers to Jordan were Syrian Arab Republic ($X), Lebanon ($X) and Greece ($X), with a combined 100% share of total imports.

Lebanon, with a CAGR of +9.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cherry import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Turkey ($X per ton) and Lebanon ($X per ton), while the price for Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) and Greece ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
