Market Size for Cherries and Sour Cherries in Jordan

The Jordanian cherry and sour cherry market fell to $X in 2022, which is down by -14.3% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -28.3% against 2020 indices. Cherry and sour cherry consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Production of Cherries and Sour Cherries in Jordan

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry production expanded rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 187% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of cherries and sour cherries in Jordan fell to X tons per ha, which is down by -2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cherry and sour cherry yield increased by +1.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the yield increased by 120% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the average cherry and sour cherry yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of cherries and sour cherries were harvested in Jordan; picking up by 10% against 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a slight curtailment. The cherry and sour cherry harvested area peaked at X ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of cherries and sour cherries, when their volume decreased by -38.9% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw perceptible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 385%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 806% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) were the main destinations of cherry and sour cherry exports from Jordan, with a combined 71% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Syrian Arab Republic and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +37.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Kuwait ($X) and Bahrain ($X) constituted the largest markets for cherry and sour cherry exported from Jordan worldwide, with a combined 75% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Syrian Arab Republic and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +57.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average cherry and sour cherry export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 101%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lebanon (+17.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Cherries and Sour Cherries

Imports into Jordan

In 2022, the amount of cherries and sour cherries imported into Jordan reduced dramatically to X tons, which is down by -41.3% on 2021. Overall, imports saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 173%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry imports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a measured expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 191% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main suppliers of cherry and sour cherry imports to Jordan, with a combined 100% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (with a CAGR of 0.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Syrian Arab Republic ($X), Lebanon ($X) and Greece ($X) appeared to be the largest cherry and sour cherry suppliers to Jordan, together accounting for 100% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Syrian Arab Republic, with a CAGR of 0.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Import Prices by Country

The average cherry and sour cherry import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 5.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Turkey ($X per ton) and Lebanon ($X per ton), while the price for Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) and Greece ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
