Durum Wheat Market Size in Jordan
For the third consecutive year, the Jordanian durum wheat market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by less than 0.1% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Durum Wheat Production in Jordan
In value terms, durum wheat production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a pronounced increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 64%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
In 2022, the average durum wheat yield in Jordan expanded significantly to X tons per ha, growing by 7% compared with 2021 figures. In general, the yield showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 59%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the average durum wheat yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of durum wheat production in Jordan shrank to X ha, which is down by -13.1% on 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area recorded a mild descent. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, durum wheat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1,143% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main destinations of durum wheat exports from Jordan, together comprising 98% of total exports.
From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +32.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for durum wheat exports from Jordan, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+26.1% per year) and the Netherlands (-6.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average durum wheat export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 53% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 159%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+16.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Jordan
Durum wheat imports into Jordan dropped slightly to X tons in 2022, almost unchanged from 2021 figures. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 132%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, durum wheat imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 103%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Romania (X tons) was the main supplier of durum wheat to Jordan, accounting for a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, durum wheat imports from Romania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Ukraine (X tons), with a 1.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Romania totaled +33.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (-18.6% per year) and Ukraine (-29.0% per year).
In value terms, Romania ($X) constituted the largest supplier of durum wheat to Jordan, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 3.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 1.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Romania amounted to +35.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (-19.9% per year) and Ukraine (-30.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average durum wheat import price amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Romania ($X per ton) and Ukraine ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) and the United States ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
