Groundnuts Market Size in Jordan

The Jordanian groundnuts market contracted sharply to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -30.7% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In 2022, approx. X tons of ground-nut (in-shell) were imported into Jordan; which is down by -49.8% against 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, groundnuts imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Egypt (X tons) constituted the largest groundnuts supplier to Jordan, accounting for a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, groundnuts imports from Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), fivefold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Egypt stood at -12.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-9.5% per year) and Turkey (-13.0% per year).

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ground-nut (in-shell) to Jordan, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Egypt amounted to -8.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-9.3% per year) and Turkey (-2.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average groundnuts import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, groundnuts import price increased by +64.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Turkey ($X per ton) and Egypt ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) and Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+11.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
