Melon Seed Market Size in Jordan

After four years of decline, the Jordanian melon seed market increased by 1,109% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, faced a dramatic shrinkage. Melon seed consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of melon seed decreased by -54.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 179% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

In value terms, melon seed exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 173%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Free Zones (X tons) was the main destination for melon seed exports from Jordan, with a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, melon seed exports to Free Zones exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Palestine (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Kuwait (X tons), with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Free Zones stood at +29.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Palestine (+3.6% per year) and Kuwait (+26.7% per year).

In value terms, Free Zones ($X) remains the key foreign market for melon seed exports from Jordan, comprising 34% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Palestine ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Kuwait, with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Free Zones totaled +36.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Palestine (+5.5% per year) and Kuwait (+21.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average melon seed export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 7.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 70%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Free Zones ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+16.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Jordan

In 2022, imports of melon seed into Jordan shrank markedly to X tons, waning by -40.2% against the previous year. In general, imports faced a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 71%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon seed imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 92%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Afghanistan (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of melon seed to Jordan, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, melon seed imports from Afghanistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Afghanistan amounted to -16.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (-10.3% per year) and Sudan (-10.1% per year).

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of melon seed to Jordan, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 23% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Afghanistan was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+7.1% per year) and Sudan (+8.8% per year).

The average melon seed import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -10.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 301% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the price for Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+93.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
