In 2022, the Jordanian nutmeg, mace and cardamom market increased by 31% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption posted prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Jordan

Nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports from Jordan contracted rapidly to X tons in 2022, which is down by -69.2% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 226%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 184% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Free Zones (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) were the main destinations of nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports from Jordan, with a combined 88% share of total exports. Indonesia and Qatar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +124.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Free Zones ($X), Egypt ($X) and Iraq ($X) were the largest markets for nutmeg, mace and cardamom exported from Jordan worldwide, together comprising 91% of total exports. Indonesia and Qatar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8.3%.

Among the main countries of destination, Qatar, with a CAGR of +57.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -28.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 70%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Iraq ($X per ton) and Qatar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($X per ton) and Free Zones ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Egypt (+26.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Nutmeg, Mace And Cardamoms

Imports into Jordan

In 2022, purchases abroad of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 138% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 115%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Guatemala (X tons) was the main nutmeg, mace and cardamom supplier to Jordan, with a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports from Guatemala exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Guatemala totaled +8.5%.

In value terms, Guatemala ($X) constituted the largest supplier of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms to Jordan, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Guatemala stood at +18.2%.

Import Prices by Country

The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -32.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 47%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guatemala ($X per ton), while the price for India totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
