The Jordanian olive oil market contracted to $X in 2022, which is down by -12.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of olive oil and its fractions decreased by -6.1% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 953% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, olive oil exports reached $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 766% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for olive oil exports from Jordan, with a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, olive oil exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Saudi Arabia (X tons), twofold. Kuwait (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United Arab Emirates totaled +21.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+14.2% per year) and Kuwait (+9.4% per year).
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the key foreign market for olive oil and its fractions exports from Jordan, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Saudi Arabia stood at +11.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+15.6% per year) and Kuwait (+8.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average olive oil export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kuwait (-0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Olive Oil Imports
Imports into Jordan
After three years of decline, purchases abroad of olive oil and its fractions increased by 23% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, olive oil imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 49%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest olive oil supplier to Jordan, accounting for a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, olive oil imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey amounted to +36.7%.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of olive oil and its fractions to Jordan, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with an 8.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Turkey totaled +35.6%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average olive oil import price amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 11%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Palestine (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
