In general, the total production indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -12.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 137%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, perfume exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 68%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Free Zones (X tons) was the main destination for perfume exports from Jordan, accounting for a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, perfume exports to Free Zones exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Indonesia (X tons), eightfold. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Free Zones amounted to -4.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (+31.7% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-11.8% per year).
In value terms, Free Zones ($X) remains the key foreign market for perfumes and toilet waters exports from Jordan, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with an 8.8% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Free Zones was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (+75.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average perfume export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 56% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 284% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Indonesia ($X per ton) and Iraq ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($X per ton) and Free Zones ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq (+38.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Perfume Imports
Imports into Jordan
Perfume imports into Jordan soared to X tons in 2022, growing by 18% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +37.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, perfume imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 39%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest perfume supplier to Jordan, accounting for a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, perfume imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), fivefold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +25.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+6.9% per year) and France (+1.5% per year).
In value terms, the largest perfume suppliers to Jordan were France ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 74% of total imports. China, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UK and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
In terms of the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +27.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average perfume import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -29.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 19% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
