Salt Market Size in Jordan

In 2022, the Jordanian salt market increased by 63% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption saw a resilient increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Jordan

In 2022, shipments abroad of salt and pure sodium chloride decreased by -53.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 533% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, salt exports fell notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 1,189%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Free Zones (X tons) was the main destination for salt exports from Jordan, with a 96% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany (X tons), with a 2.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Free Zones amounted to -11.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-6.8% per year) and Palestine (-41.3% per year).

In value terms, Free Zones ($X) remains the key foreign market for salt and pure sodium chloride exports from Jordan, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 1.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Free Zones amounted to +1.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-2.7% per year) and Palestine (-25.4% per year).

The average salt export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 7.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 130% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Jordan

In 2022, salt imports into Jordan soared to X tons, jumping by 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, salt imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the largest salt supplier to Jordan, with a 35% share of total imports. Moreover, salt imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United Arab Emirates totaled +37.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+43.3% per year) and Germany (+7.3% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of salt and pure sodium chloride to Jordan, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United Arab Emirates totaled +36.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-5.5% per year) and Germany (+3.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average salt import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -37% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (-0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
