Sesame Seed Market Size in Jordan

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 266%. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Free Zones (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of sesame seed exports from Jordan, together accounting for 95% of total exports.

Imports into Jordan

In 2022, overseas purchases of sesame seed decreased by -29.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sesame seed imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -21.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Sudan (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sesame seed to Jordan, accounting for a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, sesame seed imports from Sudan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ethiopia (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by India (X tons), with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Sudan stood at +10.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ethiopia (-15.1% per year) and India (-7.8% per year).

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Sudan stood at +14.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ethiopia (-11.4% per year) and India (-3.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sesame seed import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 21% against the previous year.
