The Jordanian tomato market soared to $X in 2022, surging by 25% against the previous year. Overall, consumption posted a buoyant increase. Tomato consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Tomato Production in Jordan
In value terms, tomato production skyrocketed to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 270%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
In 2022, the average tomato yield in Jordan shrank to X tons per ha, flattening at 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. The tomato yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of tomatoes production in Jordan dropped to X ha, shrinking by -2.8% against 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 25%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the tomato harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Jordan
In 2022, overseas shipments of tomatoes decreased by -45.4% to X tons, falling for the ninth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 48%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tomato exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 26%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Saudi Arabia (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) were the main destinations of tomato exports from Jordan, with a combined 86% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of -1.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Kuwait ($X) and Bahrain ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for tomato exported from Jordan worldwide, together accounting for 74% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
Among the main countries of destination, Oman, with a CAGR of +3.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average tomato export price amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iraq ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+12.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tomato Imports
Imports into Jordan
For the third consecutive year, Jordan recorded decline in purchases abroad of tomatoes, which decreased by 0% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 134%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tomato imports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 194% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest tomato supplier to Jordan, accounting for a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, tomato imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), fivefold.
From 2016 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands totaled +24.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+191.3% per year) and France (0.0% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tomatoes to Jordan, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 17% share of total imports.
From 2016 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands amounted to +6.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+106.4% per year) and France (0.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average tomato import price amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the import price showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 26%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2016 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Palestine (-5.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
