Ammonia Market Size in Kazakhstan

The Kazakh ammonia market shrank sharply to $X in 2022, reducing by -18.3% against the previous year. Lithuania (X tons) was the main destination for ammonia exports from Kazakhstan, with a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, ammonia exports to Lithuania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Russia (X tons), tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Lithuania was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-23.0% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+6.2% per year).

The average ammonia export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, the amount of anhydrous ammonia imported into Kazakhstan contracted dramatically to X tons, dropping by -42% compared with the year before. Overall, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 104% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, ammonia imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 128% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the main supplier of ammonia to Kazakhstan, accounting for a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, ammonia imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Uzbekistan (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Russia amounted to +38.9%.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the price for Uzbekistan totaled $X per ton.
