In 2022, the Kazakh stationery market increased by 31% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Kazakhstan

Stationery exports from Kazakhstan skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, increasing by 287% against 2021. Overall, exports recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 632% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, stationery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 575%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for stationery exports from Kazakhstan, with a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, stationery exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kyrgyzstan (X tons), more than tenfold. Mongolia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia stood at +71.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kyrgyzstan (-7.2% per year) and Mongolia (-4.9% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for articles of stationery exports from Kazakhstan, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 7.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia stood at +77.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kyrgyzstan (-3.1% per year) and Mongolia (-14.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average stationery export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 1.8% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, stationery export price decreased by -24.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 67%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, purchases abroad of articles of stationery increased by 35% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, stationery imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Russia (X tons) constituted the largest stationery supplier to Kazakhstan, with a 67% share of total imports. Moreover, stationery imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Tajikistan (X tons), with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-12.4% per year) and Tajikistan (+1,668.1% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of articles of stationery to Kazakhstan, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Russia stood at +4.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-5.4% per year) and Switzerland (+27.8% per year).

The average stationery import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 11%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
