The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Exports from Kazakhstan
After five years of growth, overseas shipments of cheese and curd decreased by -27.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 103%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
In value terms, cheese and curd exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 113% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Russia (X tons) was the main destination for cheese and curd exports from Kazakhstan, accounting for a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, cheese and curd exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kyrgyzstan (X tons), threefold. Armenia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia amounted to +11.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+14.3% per year) and Armenia (+7.1% per year).
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for cheese and curd exports from Kazakhstan, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Armenia, with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia amounted to +17.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+14.7% per year) and Armenia (+14.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average cheese and curd export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 32% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 52% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mongolia (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kazakhstan
In 2022, cheese and curd imports into Kazakhstan rose rapidly to X tons, with an increase of 5.1% compared with the previous year. In general, total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +73.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, cheese and curd imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a moderate expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Russia (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) were the main suppliers of cheese and curd imports to Kazakhstan, with a combined 78% share of total imports. Lithuania, Iran, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Iran (with a CAGR of +250.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X), Belarus ($X) and Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest cheese and curd suppliers to Kazakhstan, with a combined 83% share of total imports. Lithuania, Kyrgyzstan, Iran and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Iran, with a CAGR of +191.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cheese and curd import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 26% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the price for Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
