The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, durum wheat exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 166% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Italy (X tons) was the main destination for durum wheat exports from Kazakhstan, with a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, durum wheat exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Russia (X tons), threefold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy totaled +3.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-9.4% per year) and Turkey (-6.3% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for durum wheat exports from Kazakhstan, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Latvia, with an 8.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Italy totaled +7.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-3.8% per year) and Latvia (+23.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average durum wheat export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, durum wheat export price increased by +101.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sweden (+12.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kazakhstan
In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of durum wheat, when their volume decreased by -9.5% to X tons. In general, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,372%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, durum wheat imports fell notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 841%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the main durum wheat supplier to Kazakhstan, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.
