After two years of decline, the Kazakh preserved herring market increased by 0.4% to $X in 2021. In general, the total consumption indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. In 2021, shipments abroad of herrings (prepared or preserved) was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a sharp downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 169% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved herring exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 197% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan (X kg), Turkmenistan (X kg) and Kyrgyzstan (X kg) were the main destinations of preserved herring exports from Kazakhstan, together comprising 81% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Turkmenistan (with a CAGR of -9.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Tajikistan ($X) remains the key foreign market for herrings (prepared or preserved) exports from Kazakhstan, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkmenistan ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 17% share.

Overall, export price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, preserved herring export price increased by +28.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 30%. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tajikistan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tajikistan (+22.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Kazakhstan

In 2021, overseas purchases of herrings (prepared or preserved) decreased by -41% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 125%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, preserved herring imports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 141% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) constituted the largest preserved herring supplier to Kazakhstan, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved herring imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belarus (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia stood at +6.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+30.4% per year) and Latvia (-12.3% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of herrings (prepared or preserved) to Kazakhstan, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Russia totaled +6.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+29.5% per year) and Latvia (-14.3% per year).

The average preserved herring import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 38% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
