Maize Market Size in Kazakhstan

In 2022, the Kazakh maize market increased by 18% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Maize consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Maize Production in Kazakhstan

In value terms, maize production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a noticeable downturn. Maize production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Kazakhstan

In 2022, maize exports from Kazakhstan contracted significantly to X tons, dropping by -92.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 1,862% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for maize exports from Kazakhstan, with a 93% share of total exports. Moreover, maize exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kyrgyzstan (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia stood at +54.9%.

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) remains the key foreign market for maize (green) exports from Kazakhstan, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Kyrgyzstan amounted to +52.8%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average maize export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 20% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belarus (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Kazakhstan

In 2022, approx. X tons of maize (green) were imported into Kazakhstan; shrinking by -25.4% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, maize imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 67%. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Uzbekistan (X tons) was the main maize supplier to Kazakhstan, accounting for a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), more than tenfold. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Uzbekistan amounted to +3.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+61.1% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-17.3% per year).

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of maize (green) to Kazakhstan, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 6.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Uzbekistan was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+40.5% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-16.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average maize import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 9.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 50% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+0.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
