Newsprint Market Size in Kazakhstan

For the sixth consecutive year, the Kazakh newsprint market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -0.2% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the market value increased by 2.1%. Newsprint consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Newsprint Production in Kazakhstan

In value terms, newsprint production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 17%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Kazakhstan

In 2022, shipments abroad of newsprint decreased by -9.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after nine years of growth. Overall, exports, however, posted a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 33%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, newsprint exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 29%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Armenia (X tons) was the main destination for newsprint exports from Kazakhstan, with a 82% share of total exports. Moreover, newsprint exports to Armenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kyrgyzstan (X tons), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Armenia totaled +2.0%.

In value terms, Armenia ($X) remains the key foreign market for newsprint exports from Kazakhstan, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 32% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Armenia stood at +7.0%.

In 2022, the average newsprint export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 26% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, newsprint export price increased by +98.7% against 2012 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Armenia stood at $X per ton.

Imports into Kazakhstan

For the tenth year in a row, Kazakhstan recorded decline in purchases abroad of newsprint, which decreased by -10.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a deep setback. The smallest decline of -2.3% was in 2015. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, newsprint imports expanded to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 6.2%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the main supplier of newsprint to Kazakhstan, accounting for a 90% share of total imports. Moreover, newsprint imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), ninefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia totaled -11.5%.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of newsprint to Kazakhstan, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 12% share of total imports.
