In general, exports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 288%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, nickel and lithium accumulators exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 404%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Russia (X units), Turkmenistan (X units) and Belarus (X units) were the main destinations of nickel and lithium accumulators exports from Kazakhstan, with a combined 70% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Turkmenistan (with a CAGR of +131.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for nickel-cadmium, nickel metal hydride, lithium-ion, lithium polymer and nickel-iron accumulators exports from Kazakhstan, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkmenistan ($X), with a 7.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 7% share.

As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Tajikistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Kazakhstan

In 2022, overseas purchases of nickel-cadmium, nickel metal hydride, lithium-ion, lithium polymer and nickel-iron accumulators decreased by -4.3% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports saw a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, nickel and lithium accumulators imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Russia (X units), China (X units) and Turkey (X units) were the main suppliers of nickel and lithium accumulators imports to Kazakhstan, with a combined 83% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +63.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of nickel-cadmium, nickel metal hydride, lithium-ion, lithium polymer and nickel-iron accumulators to Kazakhstan, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sweden ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with a 7% share.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
