Market Size for Nutmeg, Mace And Cardamoms in Kazakhstan

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Kazakh nutmeg, mace and cardamom market, when its value decreased by -22.3% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a prominent increase. Nutmeg, mace and cardamom consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In 2022, after nine years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms, when their volume decreased by -59.1% to X kg. Overall, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 214%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X kg, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 183% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Russia (X kg) was the main destination for nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports from Kazakhstan, with a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kyrgyzstan (X kg), eightfold.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia stood at +26.0%.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for nutmeg, mace and cardamoms exports from Kazakhstan, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Russia amounted to +14.7%.

The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 5.8%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kyrgyzstan (+17.8%).

Imports into Kazakhstan

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms, when their volume decreased by -23.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 95% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) constituted the largest nutmeg, mace and cardamom supplier to Kazakhstan, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Iran (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Indonesia amounted to +10.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+9.5% per year) and Iran (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Honduras ($X) constituted the largest nutmeg, mace and cardamom suppliers to Kazakhstan, together comprising 88% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Honduras, with a CAGR of +57.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 7.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($X per ton), while the price for Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Honduras (+18.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
